City crews worked to clean up a vandalized statue last Thursday morning, after the Captain James Cook in the Inner Harbour was drenched with red paint. The motive wasn’t immediately clear.

In 2018, the City of Victoria removed a statue of Sir John A. Macdonald from city hall as hundreds gathered to watch. The Captain Cook statue marks his arrival to Pacific Northwest in 1778.
