The BC Coroners Service has announced that a public inquest will be held into the death of Naverone Christian Landon Woods.
The inquest will take place beginning March 20 at the BC Coroners Court in Burnaby.
Woods, 23, was visiting the Lower Mainland from his home in Hazelton. At about 8 a.m. on Dec. 28, 2014, Woods entered a supermarket in Surrey and as a result of his actions there, customers and staff called 911 for police assistance. Two officers from the Metro Vancouver Transit Police attended. In the ensuing encounter, Mr. Woods was shot by one of the transit police officers. He was transported to Royal Columbia Hospital but died shortly after arrival there.
Presiding coroner Brynne Redford and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath to determine the facts surrounding this death. The jury will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances.
An inquest is a formal process that allows for public presentation of evidence relating to a death.
