Students and staff at School District 69, and at Kwalikum Beach Secondary School especially, were greeted with sad news Thursday, Oct. 11.

Carol Myhre, an English teacher and counsellor at KSS since 1989 died unexpectedly Wednesday evening (Oct. 10) in her home, said superintendent Rollie Koop.

“Yesterday was a challenging day for staff and students across SD69,” he said in an email. “The district called together a critical incident team at the school to share this information with and provide support for staff and students impacted by this news.

“Additional counselling support, teachers and administrative staff were diverted to this site to provide relief, support and assistance with communication to parents and former staff.”

Parent teacher meetings scheduled for Oct. 11 were also cacelled.

Koop said Myhre was known to her students and collegues “as a source of joy and inspiration. She encouraged everyone she worked with to be their best self and challenged them to believe in themselves when others didn’t.

“One of her students shared the following thought on a message board posted outside her classroom yesterday (Oct. 11), ‘Thank you so much for just being yourself. You made being at school fun and welcoming. You were the one teacher that totally believed in me and knew that I would make something of myself one day. I want to thank you for the love you shared. You’ve touched so many lives.'”
