Jazzercise instructor plans fundraiser for Alberta flood victims

Paula Cowan hopes to get participants dancing, working out and, ultimately, helping their neighbours to the east.

Since seeing the destruction caused by the Alberta flooding, several B.C. organizations have stepped up with fundraising concepts to assist those in need.

Paula Cowan is hoping to continue that momentum with a fundraiser that will get participants dancing, working out and, ultimately, helping their neighbours to the east.

Cowan, franchise owner of Jazzercise West Kelowna, will host an 85-minute jazzercise class by donation at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at SunRidge Community Church (1190 Stevens Rd.).

According to Cowan, jazzercise is a full body workout that combines elements of dance, cardio, strength training and yoga.

Cowan first tried the activity 20 years ago and was instantly hooked; she’s been an instructor for the past eight years.

“It becomes a lifestyle for a lot of people. It’s very well balanced and fun,” said Cowan.

“It’s a dance fitness program for anyone and everyone.”

The July 20 fundraiser is a combined effort put on by jazzercise instructors throughout the province, said Cowan. All proceeds will go to Red Cross to be dispersed to flood victims in Alberta.
