Bidding is underway on some top of the line hockey memorabilia.
The online auction for autographed National Hockey League Players Association jerseys has opened as part of the upcoming NHLPA Community Celebration fundraiser.
“It should draw a lot of interest from throughout the Okanagan,” said Akbal Mund, Vernon mayor.
Eight jerseys are up for grabs, including those autographed by Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin.
“Anything to do with the Vancouver Canucks is popular here,” said Mund of the Sedin brothers.
Bidding for the jerseys continues until 12:30 p.m. July 10 at www.32auctions.com/NHLPAJerseyAuction.
All proceeds from the auction will go towards the Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation, as will funds from the NHLPA Community Celebration at Kal Beach July 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event will feature a donation of hockey equipment from the NHLPA Goals and Dreams program to local hockey programs, music by Andrew Allen and a variety of activities.
Among the NHL players scheduled to appear are Curtis Lazar, David Booth, Andrew Ference, Josh Gorges, Scott Hartnell, Ryan Johansen, Brayden Schenn and Luke Schenn. Former players that are expected to be there are Kelly Hrudey, Cory Cross, Brent Gilchrist, Dean McAmmond, Fernando Pisani, Joe Reekie and Steve Webb.
Pre-purchased tickets with a suggested donation of $5 will provide entrants with a chance to win other signed NHL player jerseys, a chance to participate in special stand-up paddleboard events, and a food and drink voucher.
Tickets are available at the visitor information centre and at the VJH Foundation office.
“All of the money will go to a good cause,” said Mund, adding that he is impressed with the NHLPA getting involved in the community.
“They are doing it because it’s the right thing to do.”
Along with the NHLPA, the City of Vernon and the VJH Foundation, the other partner in the event is Predator Ridge Resort.
