Jet landing creates buzz

The largest plane to land at the Port Hardy Airport in years arrived Sept. 5.

The largest plane to land at the Port Hardy airport in years, a Boeing 737 800 jetliner, arrived on Sept. 5.

The group aboard, from Raleigh, North Carolina, were met by Customs and Immigration Officers, who had to be brought in to receive them, said Port Hardy Airport Manager Torin Domay.

Once they were cleared by Customs, the group of 18 boarded four helicopters bound for a local resort. The Boeing 737 800 “is a common sized aircraft, that used to serve this area,” so no special steps were required to accommodate it, said Domay, adding that “it was private charter.”

With the advent of more economical, smaller aircraft, larger planes don’t come to Port Hardy very often, Domay said.
