Shovels are expected to hit the ground this month as construction begins on the redevelopment of Jubilee Park.
The park is slated for improvements that the city hopes will increase its connection with the historic downtown, add parking, and improve safety and visibility. It will also result in the relocation of the lawn bowling club to Mill Lake Park.
Construction is expected to last into July, before a pause that will allow for summer events like the Jam in Jubilee and the ADBA car show to proceed.
The lawn bowling area will remain in place throughout this season. In the meantime, new facilities will be built at Mill Lake Park, on the south side of the lake.
The changes at Jubilee Park will see parking in the area currently occupied by the Jubilee Park Lawn Bowling Club. The parking area at the south of the lot will get a facelift, and grass will be added closer to McCallum Road.
As for the park itself, a berm up to six metres high will be built just north of the playground to provide a natural amphitheatre facing the old Centennial Library. A sidewalk will also bisect the site and connect the park’s entrance opposite Switzer Avenue with Pauline Street.
The project has a $2.7 million budget. The city will pay a little more than half of that, with another $800,000 coming from the province and $400,000 coming from private donations, including funding from the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association.
