Curbside collection customers in Chilliwack are being asked to keep the household paper products out of the compost for now.
City of Chilliwack is advising residents that COVID-19 has shifted the curbside recycling, compost, and garbage rules temporarily in the name of public safety.
Paper towels, paper napkins and facial tissues, previously accepted as compostable, will no longer be accepted in the green cart with the other compost items for the time being.
“Please bag all garbage. Do not place un-bagged waste loose in garbage containers,” according to city COVID-19 update.
All personal waste, including wipes, tissues, gloves, and masks, if someone in the household is ill, should be double-bagged in securely tied plastic garbage bags for curbside collection.
“These measures will help stop the spread of COVID-19 and protect our curbside crews so they stay healthy and can continue to provide waste collection,” according to the city update.
And remember not to flush unflushables like disinfectant wipes, baby wipes and paper towels. They should be bagged, securely tied, and disposed of with regular garbage.
