Kelowna city councillor back in his council seat after hospitalization

Coun. Charlie Hodge calls his brush with death in KGH a "sedation vacation."

Following his near-death experience in Kelowna General Hospital two weeks ago, city Coun, Charlie Hodge was back in his seat in council chambers Monday, joking about what happened to him and thanking his doctors, nurses, wife and the general public for their support.

Calling his week-long stay in KGH where he was sedated in order to rid his body of a dangerous build up of carbon dioxide his “sedation vacation,” Hodge said he was thrilled to be back in council chambers.

“I have to say, I sound like a broken record, but I truly am thankful for being here,” he told his council colleagues.

Earlier Hodge indicated he was not back at work with the blessing of his doctors. But he felt he had to return as soon as possible.

Hodge was admitted to KGH Jan. 2 and it was discovered his CO2 levels were nearly three times higher than normal.

Hodge, who suffers from emphysema, also underwent serious jaw surgery and reconstruction last year as a result of an infection.
