The arrival of firemen is oftentimes a sign of impending relief, but this weekend a few Kelowna cyclists saw the downside of the usually heroic crew.
According to RCMP a loose hose created a bit of chaos at the intersection of Abbott and Harvey, when it came of a Kelowna Fire Department truck en route to an emergency call at Leon Avenue.
“(The hose) got snagged on a lamppost, then the fire truck turned at the intersection, and it clotheslined some cyclists,” said Const. Kris Clark.
The cyclists were swept from their bicycles and landed in the bushes.
“Firefighters on board the truck were not immediately aware of the incident or the injured females,” said Lou Wilde, the Deputy Fire Chief.
Once they made it to their initial destination, however, they discovered they were missing an integral part of their gear and that led them back on the path they’d just travelled.
“When the fire engine returned to the corner of Abbott Street and Harvey Ave, firefighters found two females with minor leg injuries,” said Wilde.
“Firefighters attended to the injured ladies and called for BC Ambulance and the RCMP. The two injured were transported to KGH by ambulance for further assessment and treatment.”
No serious injuries were reported.
The Kelowna Fire Department and the City of Kelowna Safety Officer are conducting a formal investigation of the incident to examine the cause.
