Kelowna firefighters douse suspicious blaze

Kelowna fire crews responded to a sighting of smoke in the Hein Road area early Saturday morning.

Kelowna fire crews responded to a sighting of smoke in the Hein Road area early Saturday morning.

The fire was spotted by members of Kelowna Fire Department from Station Three.

Crews noticed smoke coming from the basement area of the structure upon arrival at 405 Hein Rd. They began an initial attack until finding “suspicious material.”

According to platoon captain Tim Light, the firefighters were pulled out of the residence until FortisBC could disconnect the power to the house.

Kelowna Mounties were notified of the findings and an investigation began this morning.

Once the power was disconnected, crews were able to extinguish the fire, which was difficult due to the age and condition of the house.

Three engines, one rescue vehicle, a command vehicle and a safety truck along with 16 personnel responded to the blaze.

The structure was not insured by the owner.
