By all accounts, a 27-year-old Kelowna is lucky to be alive after she was struck by a pickup truck in an intersection Thursday evening.
Police came upon a pedestrian collision on Harvey Avenue at Ethel Street, May 1 just before 6 p.m.
“Apparently, a 27-year-old Kelowna woman was walking southbound across the highway in the crosswalk on the lake side of the intersection when she was struck by an eastbound black Dodge pickup travelling in the High Occupancy Vehicle lane,” said Const. Kris Clark.
“The force threw the woman about 40 feet, leaving her shoes nearer the point of impact. The driver of the pickup continued through the red light and was followed by a witness onto Gagnon Place. A stop sign was struck as well as a couple vehicles before the suspect was blocked in and his ignition keys removed.”
Police found the driver exhibiting symptoms of alcohol impairment and commenced an impaired driving investigation. The 69-year-old Kelowna man was taken to the RCMP detachment where he provided breath samples in excess of twice the legal limi
The woman was rushed to hospital but has since been released and is fortunate to be alive, suffering only relatively minor injuries in the crash.
The 69-year-old Kelowna man faces a number of potential charges related to the crash as well as impaired driving. He has since been released for Court at a later date.
