SURREY — BC Coroner’s Service has identified the man who died in a Surrey farming accident last week as 51-year-old Kenneth Mark Nootebos.

The Nootebos family has operated Mary’s Farm in South Surrey for 50 years.

Kenneth ran the business with his brother Mike.

“It’s a rainy day and this week has been a very difficult and sad one for the Mary’s Garden family,” reads a post on the company’s Facebook page from Oct. 8, “but we just want our customers to know that the farm is still open for business.”

BC Coroner’s Service said Kenneth was part of a crew working on a mechanical beet-harvesting project on a farm located on 40th Avenue in Surrey on Oct. 6. At about 2:45 p.m. he became trapped in some of the machinery.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The BC Coroners Service, WorkSafeBC and Surrey RCMP continue to investigate the incident.
