The members of the Keremeos fire department had a very busy month, not only dealing with emergency call outs, but also participating in a Fire Prevention assembly at the Cawston primary School and a couple weekends of extra training.

Keremeos Fire Department members, along with firefighters from Naramata, Kaleden, Okanagan Falls, Hedley, Oliver, Summerland and Penticton spent a Saturday with representatives from Fortis Power and Fortis Gas. The purpose of this “train the trainer” training was to ensure that members of the local fire departments were up to date on how to deal with gas and electrical emergencies. Each participant will take this updated knowledge back and train the members at their own departments.

Two weekend courses saw two different groups of members of the Keremeos Fire Department and Keremeos Search and Rescue participate in road rescue rope operations. The 20 hours of training saw the members hone up on their knot tying and embankment rescue skills. They were then taken out to the gravel pit where they practiced their skills, first on a 30 degree, then onto a 60 degree slope.

Did you know, emergency service volunteers who participate in 200 hrs per year of training, being on standby and responding to incidents are eligible for a $3,000 tax credit? Interested in becoming a member of the Keremeos fire department?

Applications can be picked up at the offices of the Village of Keremeos and the Keremeos Review, or down loaded from the Keremeos fire department website at keremeosfire.ca
