Kettle campaign requires boost

Vernon’s Salvation Army kettle campaign has only raised about $84,000 of its $160,000 goa

Christmas bells need to keep ringing.

With Christmas Eve Wednesday, Vernon’s Salvation Army kettle campaign has only raised about $84,000 of its $160,000 goal.

“We have a long ways to go,” said David MacBain, community ministries director.

“There’s considerable concern. We raised the target from $132,000 last year because we’re falling behind (financially) and our expenses are increasing.”

It’s hoped the campaign got a boost Saturday through Wal/Mart’s matching funds initiative.

According to MacBain, community support is needed so the Salvation Army can continue to meet the needs of residents, including operating the food bank.

“We want to expand our programs,” said MacBain.

“In January, we have a program called Breakthrough that helps women improve their lives.”

Christmas food hampers were handed out last week and when last minute requests are added to the mix, they should reach the mid-600s. That is compared to 778 hampers last year.

“It’s a guessing game as to why the numbers are down. It could be because the economy is possibly doing better,” said MacBain.
