Kindale Development Association has unveiled its expansion plans.
The organization owns two lots on Patterson Avenue in Armstrong, and plans to amalgamate the lots in order to construct a new two-storey building.
“The main floor will include 6,200 square feet of Kindale office space,” said George Wellwood, Kindale spokesperson. “The second floor will feature seven apartments.”
If passed by Armstrong council, the apartments would include four one-bedroom suites, two two-bedroom apartments and one three-bedroom.
The aim, said Wellwood, would be to have the apartments fit under the affordable housing umbrella.
Kindale has applied to the city to amend an official community plan bylaw that would change the land use designation of the property from multi-family residential to general commercial.
The organization has also requested a zoning amendment change for the property from civic zone to general commercial.
Council unanimously gave first two readings to the bylaw amendments, clearing the way for a public hearing on the matter. The public can find out more information on Monday, April 23, at 6:45 p.m. in council chambers.
Kindale currently owns the Bechtold Centre which is on the Patterson Avenue lots and will remain there.
The centre houses the Kindale Thrift Store on the main level, a major money generator for Kindale for charitable and non-profit enterprises.
The lower level features a Kindale community living centre.
Kindale’s administration offices, currently housed in the Century 21 building in Armstrong, would move to the newly constructed building.
