The graduation ceremony for the Kitimat Valley Institute’s Mind over Metals course was held on Friday, August 17.
The camp, funded by LNG Canada and organized by the Canadian Welding Bureau, was held for Kitimat high school students.
The camp was attended by Winnipeg’s R.B. Russell High School’s award-winning welding instructor Mike Johnston, the school’s principal Jackie Connell, and two students, Trinity Harry and Joseph Ginter, who gained national attention when they welded a memorial rose in honour of Tina Fontaine, a 15-year-old Indigenous girl from Sagkeeng First Nation whose body was found in the Red River in 2014.
It took the two 16-year-old students about 30 hours to forge the metal rose in honour of Fontaine. The idea was sparked by Trinity’s experiences.
