Ladysmith Arts Council’s free digital skills webcast was a success, with over 300 artists joining for the live webcast, and more watching the video afterward.

On July 25, the Ladysmith Arts Council held their first webcast to ask the question: “how can Vancouver Island be Canada’s arts and culture powerhouse?” That discussion led to the recent webcast that featured talks from local artists, and CBC’s Terry O’Reilly. The Arts Council is hosting a second meeting on August 15 at 4:00 pm to see who wants to help the Arts Council obtain more funding to explore the arts and culture powerhouse concept.

“It was very clear that the arts councils and stakeholders on the Island felt the need for a collaborative effort in marketing Vancouver Island as an arts powerhouse, so we’ll be moving forward with that,” Arts Council vice president Ora Steyn said.

There are three streams of funding available through the Canada Arts Council including a digital literacy stream, an audience engagement stream, and organizational transformation stream. Steyn said it is likely other art councils on Vancouver Island will apply for funding, and she hopes that the councils can collaborate to provide Island artists with access to all streams of information.

“The whole aim of all of this is to make Vancouver Island into an art powerhouse, and to give the artists the tools they need,” Steyn said.
