Ladysmith RCMP with the help of the Island District Emergency Response Team (ERT) seized drugs and weapons, included a fully loaded assault rifle after executing a search warrant last week.

The RCMP entered the home on White Street during the early evening hours on Friday, Nov. 25..

Investigators were able to seize a quantity of heroin, crystal methamphetamine and cocaine as well as other evidence to support charges of alleged “drug trafficking,” said Staff Sgt. Ken Brissard.

RCMP also located a handgun as well as a loaded assault rifle.  It’s alleged the rifle had been reported stolen in a home break-in approximately four months ago in Nanaimo.

The weapon was also equipped with a prohibited ammunition magazine.

A 35-year-old Nanaimo man was detained during the search and later released pending formal charges.

Brissard couldn’t comment on whether the man was cooperating with police.

The approximate street value of the drugs is in the range of $3,000.

It also wasn’t immediately clear if the man owned or was renting the home.

“People come and go and it’s not unusual that they’ll couch surf at these houses,” Brissard said.

RCMP became aware of the house through investigative techniques.

“Certainly we encourage the public, if they think there’s suspicious activity, to alert us to that,” he said. “We sometimes just need to be pointed in the right direction.”
