Students in Ladysmith return to school one day later than their counterparts in Chemainus this year.
Today marks opening day for the 2013-14 school year at Cowichan Valley schools while students at Nanaimo-Ladysmith schools wait until tomorrow to attend their first classes of the year.
Chemainus Elementary and Chemainus Secondary open this morning with dismissal scheduled to take place three hours earlier than usual. All students are expected to attend school at Chemainus Elementary today, but only eighth graders and new students are scheduled to attend classes at CSS this morning. CSS reverts to its regular schedule tomorrow (Wednesday, Sept. 4).
Students in Ladysmith, Cedar and North Oyster, meanwhile, have had their opening day pushed back to tomorrow due to a staff in-service day scheduled for today.
Nanaimo-Ladysmith schools open Wednesday, Sept. 4, with a full day of classes scheduled for primary school students.
For Ladysmith Secondary students in grades nine through 12, the new school year begins with an 8:30 a.m. homeroom session followed by morning classes and early dismissal at noon. LSS students in Grade 8, meanwhile, begin their school year with an 11 a.m. assembly followed by classes until 3 p.m.
Students in grades nine through 12 at Cedar Community Secondary begin their school year at 9 a.m. Wednesday with dismissal scheduled for noon. CCS students in Grade 8, meanwhile, are scheduled to attend school from 12:30-3:30 p.m.
Aside from the closure of South Wellington Elementary late June, no further changes to local schools come into effect this calendar year.
According to a notification published by the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District (SD68) June 27, the public consultation process regarding the proposed closures of Ecole Davis Road and North Oyster Elementary has been extended to Dec. 1, 2013, with both schools tentatively scheduled to close June 30, 2014.
Also in the works is the reconfiguration of LSS to house students in grades seven through 12 — with French Immersion programming available for grades seven and eight — beginning September 2014.
SD68 approved a bylaw in June that will see Cedar Community Secondary close for renovations June 30, 2014. Following renovations, a newly renovated Cedar Secondary is slated to house students from Woodbank Primary and North Cedar Intermediate after both schools close in June 2015.
Programming and grade configurations at Chemainus schools remain unchanged following SD79’s recent restructuring.
