Champions golf event comes to town
Bear Mountain Resort and the surrounding area is sure to be a hive of activity this weekend as some of the world’s top over 50 golfers compete at the Pacific Links Golf Championship.
This is the first time the event will be held at the Langford resort, and motorists can expect heavier than usual traffic along Millstream Road and Bear Mountain Parkway.
The Champions Tour event features a $2.5 million purse and past major golf champions such as Vijay Singh, Mark O’Meara, Larry Mize and Bernhard Langer.
Canadians in the field include Calgary’s Stephen Ames and Victoria native Jim Rutledge.
The tournament begins today (Sept. 23) with the final round scheduled for Sunday.
Hefty fine coming for street racing
At Monday’s meeting Langford council members took action against those causing nuisances in the city. Council members adopted a bylaw to regulate, abate and prohibit nuisances (activities that substantially and unreasonably interfere with a person’s use and enjoyment of a public area or land they occupy) and provided for the cost recovery of enforcement.
Nuisances include (but are not limited to) a group of people making noise, loud music, illegal car racing, revving engines, fighting, littering and trespassing. A person caught violating this bylaw – or fails to do anything required by this bylaw – could face a fine ranging from $200 to $10,000. Each day an offence continues will also be deemed as a separate and distinct offence.
Horse therapy program in works
Council members are considering changing one Finlayson Arm Road property to the new rural agriculture and eco-tourism zoning designation to allow for equestrian therapy and riding activities on the property.
Some conditions go along with the rezoning. A site servicing feasibility review must be conducted and a covenant must be registered on the property title stating that any necessary underground or above ground servicing upgrades will be completed at the applicant’s expense.
The property, located at 1128 Finlayson Arm Rd., is currently zoned for rural residential.
