Langley drivers are still texting and talking on cellphones a lot.
On Thursday morning, several volunteers set up at busy intersections like 200 Street and 64 Avenue documenting license plates of drivers talking or texting. Within hours, 177 drivers were written up, said Lorraine Grennan, Langley RCMP’s Community Policing municipal supervisor. Each of those drivers will be sent an education warning letter to help them understand the dangers of driving and talking/texting.
“We had one officer at 208 St. and 84 Avenue handing out tickets and she just getting one after another,” said Grennan. “Just leave your phone alone. Driving and texting is the third leading cause of fatal crashes.”
According to ICBC, 94 crash deaths a year in B.C. are caused by distracted drivers using a phone while behind the wheel.
“We saw moms with kids in the car and you have to ask, what is your priorities? Well, of course, it’s your kids.”
The distracted drivers campaign is supported by ICBC, the province, police and community policing volunteers.
