Langley Year in Review: Pool plan dubbed all wet

The Aldergrove pool debate ended without a victory for indoor pool proponents.

A new Aldergrove rec centre including an ice arena and pool was announced in 2015. But the question of the pool plan lingered into 2016.

Residents of Aldergrove asked for what Murrayville and Walnut Grove already have – an indoor pool.

First, the Township council voted to build a canopy over the six-lane, 25-metre outdoor pool, at a cost of an extra $1.5 million.

But residents were still not satisfied, after years of lobbying for a fully enclosed facility.

In March they held a rally at the site, and gathered more than 1,000 signatures on a petition pushing for the upgrades. They worried the pool would be unusable most of the year.

Langley Township council didn’t quite go that far, but changes to the plan did come through in April.

The council voted for an extra $2 million to be added to the project to create a deep end, and to extend the canopy over the main swimming area.

In August, some outside money came in as the Aldergrove Credit Union pledged a $250,000 contribution to the $33 million project, which will now be named after the ACU.
