Residents are being reminded of changes in traffic patterns to accommodate the large number of people expected to honour Patrick Nicol.
A memorial service for Nicol, a city councillor and regional district chairperson who died Jan. 15 from cancer, will be held today (Monday) at Trinity United Church at 2 p.m.
“Patrick was very popular in the community,” said Clint Kanester, bylaw compliance manager, adding that plans take into account a large public turnout.
To accommodate additional public parking, the right-hand driving lanes on Alexis Park Drive, between 30th and 39th avenues, will be closed to traffic on today between 1 and 4:30 p.m. to accommodate street parking. The city is requesting the public’s co-operation in reducing congestion by avoiding the Alexis Park Drive area during this time period.
Bylaw compliance officers and community policing volunteers and staff will be on hand to direct traffic on Alexis Park Drive.
A temporary crosswalk will also be established in front of the church so people can get across the road.
“We want to make sure safety for everyone is key,” said Kanester.
“There isn’t a lot of places to park in that area. The side roads are narrow,” said Kanester.
Anyone wanting to attend the service is advised there’s limited seating at the church.
As a result, the city is establishing a live video feed of the service at Kal Tire Place and the Schubert Centre.
Once the church is nearing seating capacity, vehicles will be directed to Kal Tire Place or the Schubert Centre.
