Another suspicious fire in Vernon can be added to the list.
Vernon Fire Rescue Services and Vernon RCMP are treating a fire in the locked Rona compound in the 2200 block of 58th Avenue shortly after midnight Friday as suspicious in nature.
“It appears somebody again gained access to a locked compound and lit quite a number of pallets being stored to be recycled on fire,” said deputy fire chief Jack Blair. “The pallets were stored off to one side against a fence.”
Fire crews were able to get some water on the pallets and knock the fire down. They were helped by some Rona employees who showed up and unlocked the gate so the firefighters could gain better access.
Crews were able to fully extinguish the fire, which did not spread to any buildings.
Nobody was injured.
The number of suspicious fires in Greater Vernon has now risen to nearly 20 in the last two months.
Vernon Fire Rescue Services and the RCMP continue to investigate all of the fires.
The only common denominator in all of the incidents is that they occur between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.
“We urge the public to keep their eyes out, particularly in the midnight hours,” said Blair. “If they see anything out of place, please notify the RCMP or Vernon Fire Rescue Services.”
