The Canadian Mental Health Association Mid-Island will be hosting two suicide prevention workshops in Sooke this month.
The workshops, called safeTALK, helps participants gain knowledge and training on how to help a person who is having suicidal thoughts.
Participants will learn how to identify people who may be suicidal, how to approach them and talk to them about it, and how to connect them with community supports and resources that could save the person’s life.
“I think it’s important to do this in every community because on Vancouver Island alone, it averages out to we lose someone to suicide every three days,” said Vicki Swan, administration coordinator with the CMHA Mid-Island.
“Suicide is preventable, so these workshops are all about making communities suicide safe.”
The workshops take place March 13 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at SEAPARC, and March 14 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Sooke Hospice Society.
Those who attend are welcomed to bring snacks and beverages. Coffee and tea will be provided.
