Langley Fine Arts School will offer kindergarten classes, starting in the 2017/18 year.
The Fort Langley school currently begins in Grade 1 and may be the only school in B.C. not to have kindergarten, said assistant superintendent Claire Guy.
Last Tuesday, the Langley board of education unanimously approved the expansion. Currently, parents wanting to send their kids to LFAS, must enrol their child in another school for kindergarten.
The initial reason for not having a kindergarten program at LFAS had to do with half-day classes not working well with the integration of arts into students’ day, she said.
But why it has been left this long is somewhat unclear. It’s a logistical problem for parents with children attending two different schools and it is also problematic for the district.
LFAS opened in 1986 and is one of the most popular choice schools in the district with long wait lists.
