Little change to Abbotsford teachers’ union executive

Jennifer Brooks, Doug Smuland keep president, labour relations seats; Liane Loeppky voted in as VP

The executive staff of Abbotsford’s teachers’ union has remained largely the same after three weeks of voting for three different positions.

Jennifer Brooks retained her role as president of the Abbotsford District Teachers’ Association, a local of the provincial B.C. Teachers’ Federation, after a vote on April 17 and 18.

Doug Smuland, who also ran for president, kept his spot as the ADTA labour relations officer after voting on April 24 and 25, in which he ran against Grant Gasser.

The only change to the three-seat executive was vice-president, after Leslie Kemp withdrew her name from the election. Filling her spot after voting on May 1 and 2 is Liane Loeppky, defeating Charlotte Tommy.

The election fills those three spots for the 2019/20 and 2020/21 school years, and for Brooks means a full four-year term in the top spot.

“Admittedly, we have had our struggles as professionals in Abbotsford in past years, similar to teachers throughout the province, but I believe we have never strayed from our dedication to our students, parents and the community,” Brooks wrote in her written submission ahead of the vote.
