Ashcroft Curling Club is proud to announce the 2011 Dominion Cup Champions – Dwight Hodder, Paul Quesnel, Christopher Brezina, Gary Farr and alternate Cheyne Hodder.
This BC championship is for curlers from all the clubs in BC that are affiliated with Curl BC. The winning teams from the eight regional Zones meet in Richmond for the Pacific International Cup of Curling (PICC) to challenge the rest of the world.
In 2008, The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Co. sponsored a national curling event called the Dominion Curling Club Championship.
The Ashcroft team went to Enderby in March and outplayed Kelowna to win the Okanagan Zones.
On Apr. 20 the team went to Richmond, along with 15 other teams from California to Alaska, to play in the 12th annual PICC.
The teams were split into two pools of eight teams. Ashcroft finished with a 4 and 3 record. Ashcroft beat Langley and Prince George beat Alaska to decide a four-way tie.
Then Ashcroft beat Prince George to advance to the semi finals Sunday morning and beat the Mainland Golden Ears from Mission, 6-4. Washington beat Vancouver in their semi final game, which meant Ashcroft became the BC Dominion Champs.
The win over Mission was a big win and playing Washington for the gold medal at the PICC was the icing on the cake. The final score was 7-2. May I add that this was the only game the team had played that wasn’t a nailbiter.
The Ashcroft “Zones” team consisted of Dwight Hodder, Paul Quesnel, Chris Brezina and Gary Farr. Unfortunately, Chris was injured in a badminton game prior to the PICC and was not allowed to play. Cheyne Hodder stepped up to the plate and played fabulously for the team, knowing full well that if they won, Chris would be playing in the Dominion Cup on Nov. 21-26 back in Richmond. I do not think thank you sums up how the boys feel for Cheyne’s contribution to the team.
So while the “Dominion” team will be Dwight, Paul, Chris and Gary, the team that won the Pacific International Cup was Dwight, Paul, Gary and Cheyne.
Who says a small club cannot produce champion curlers? Good luck in November – we know you will do us proud. Go Team BC!
