A local high school student is combining his love of soccer with his passion for writing as he contributes to a burgeoning soccer website.
Jacob Noseworthy, who a Grade 12 with School District 51, has been contributing stories to the website, www.northernstartingeleven.com.
“It’s a new soccer website covering Canadian soccer,” said Noseworthy. “I’m covering the Vancouver Whitecaps FC as well as the Canadian national teams.”
Noseworthy writes about the games after watching them on TV and following news on the social media. He has been to a pair of Whitecaps games in person back in 2013.
“I just really like the sport,” he said. “It takes a lot of coordination and finesse. It’s a very popular sport around the world too.”
Noseworthy used to play soccer when he was younger but now prefers to watch and write about it. The Whitecaps are his favourite team. He also likes Arsenal and Barcelona.
Noseworthy writes for the website once or twice a week. “I usually write post-game recaps about how they did, what they could improve upon, what went well. I sometimes do news updates if they sign a new player or something like that. I really enjoy doing it. It’s a great group of people.”
Noseworthy said he’s one of 10 writers for the website. He was asked to do it after the website founder, Casey Hunter, contacted him after reading an article Noseworthy wrote for another site.
“I did a guest article on a website called www.awayfromthenumbers.com in 2014,” said Noseworthy. “He saw that and enjoyed my writing so he decided to pick me up as his Whitecaps reporter.”
Noseworthy hopes to study political science and journalism after graduating from high school. In addition to writing for the website, he is also an occasional contributor to the Gazette on various youth topics. He also sits on the B.C. Youth Parliament and is a keen follower of all things political.
