Science-savy students from Fraser Lake and Vanderhoof stormed the Central Interior Science Exhibition which was held in Prince George on March 12, coming back with some commendable results.
A number of students qualified to take part in the exhibition after receiving great results at the District Science Fair, held Wednesday, March 2, at Muriel Mould Primary School in Burns Lake. There were 52 projects competing in the district fair (2 non-experimental and 50 experimental) from students in Grades 4 through 8.
“The caliber of the projects was incredible, and all the participants enjoyed a wonderful day of learning and sharing,” said Candice Little, District Science Fair Co-ordinator.
A Number of students travelled to Burns Lake from Fraser Lake and Vanderhoof to participate, many coming back with great results.
In the Non-Experimental Category, Benny Bill, a grade six student from Mapes Elementary came in first place.
A number of students who won awards in the Experimental category were invited to represent School District #91 at the Central Interior Science Exhibition including: grade four student from Fraser Lake Elementary/Secondary, Jessi Pawlovich, and grade four student Kennedy Andres from Evelyn Dickson Elementary who came in third place.
In grade five, Christian Kelemen, from Mapes Elementary came in first place; also in third place was Stephanie McLean & Shae Semmler from Fraser Lake Elementary/Secondary. In grade six, in first place was Kaelen Lobelle from Evelyn Dickson Elementary and Elizabeth Schulz & Noah Nicol from Fraser Lake Elementary/Secondary. In second place was Felicia Brooks from Evelyn Dickson Elementary and in third place was Ian Watney from Ebus Academy.
In grade seven, in first place was Trent Emel from Evelyn Dickson Elementary and in third place was Kent Fehr from Evelyn Dickson Elementary.
In grade eight in first place was Andrew Schulz from Fraser Lake Elementary/Secondary.
A total of 15 projects in School District 91 traveled to Prince George for the exhibition of which nine came back with gold medals, four received silver and two received bronze medals.
Lane Hampson, a grade seven student from Evelyn Dickson Elementary received a bronze medal for the project “Which Window Insulates Better?” (Earth & Environmental Sciences). Hampson also received the BC Science Teachers’ Award ($100).
Kennedy Andres, a grade four student from Evelyn Dickson Elementary received a silver medal for the project “Strongest Wood” (Physical & Mathematical Sciences). Matthias Steiner & Nigel Watney, grade four students at Nechako Ebus also received silver medals for their project “Coin Conduction” (Engineering Sciences). Christian Kelemen, a grade five student from Mapes Elementary got a silver medal for the project: “Does Weight/Friction Affect Motion?” (Phys. & Math. Sciences). Stephanie McLean & Shae Semmler, grade five students from Fraser Lake Elem/Sec received a silver award for their project: “What Liquid?” (Life Sciences).
Students who received gold medals included Andrew Schulz from Fraser Lake Elementary/Secondary for his project: “Blood Glucose: Does it affect your memory?” (Health Sciences). He also received the Canadian Diabetes Association Award (gift); the Northern Health Sciences Award; and Best in Category for Health Sciences, Level I. He was also invited to attend the Canada Wide Science Fair representing the Science Fair Foundation of BC. Trent Emel from Evelyn Dickson Elementary received a gold medal for his project: “I Nailed It” (Engineering Sciences). He also received the CANFOR Forestry Award.
Kent Fehr from Evelyn Dickson Elementary received a gold medal for the project: “Do Plants Grow Better on Level Soil?” (Earth & Env. Sciences). Fehr received the BC Agriculture in the Classroom Award ($75), as well as Best in Category for Earth & Environmental Sciences, Level I; and was invited to attend the Canada Wide Science Fair.
Felicia Brooks, a grade six student from Evelyn Dickson Elementary was named Best in Exhibition.
