Lillooet wins $100,000 playground upgrade
Lillooet beat out 500 contenders around the province to win a $100,000 play space revitalization in the BCAA Play Here contest. The community was named a finalist in the contest last month, where it was up against competition from much larger places, with the winner voted on by members of the public. However, Lillooet playground committee member Toby Mueller said that residents of surrounding communities rallied behind the town. “We got a lot of support regionally from people in Kamloops, Clinton, Cache Creek, Ashcroft, Pemberton. People who came through our town really got behind us.” The park will be located in downtown Lillooet.
Fake employment scam
The Better Business Bureau warns people to watch out for a variation on the Mystery Shopper scam, one of their top scams in 2015. The new employment scam uses a similar cheque cashing tactic, where a supposed new hire is sent a cheque for more than $4,000 to begin work as an administration assistant working from home for www.skyeconsult.com. The new hire is instructed to deposit the cheque, buy office supplies, and then send the rest of the money back to the company. The cheque turns out to be fake, but often not before the cheque has been cashed and the money returned, leaving the person taken in by the scam responsible for the money that has been withdrawn. Skye Consult claims to be a security monitoring company with an office in Vancouver’s Bentall Centre, but this is false.
