Longtime Hope physician Joshua Greggain wins award after being nominated by colleague

Greggain receives the BC Family Physician of the Year Award from the BC College of Family Physicians

Former Hope physician Joshua Greggain has won a prestigious award from the BC College of Family Physicians.

Greggain is receiving the BC Family Physician of the Year Award, given to a family doctor who provides exemplary care to patients and takes part in activities that contribute to excellence in family medicine.

Greggain, who moved to Victoria in February after his wife, Jennifer Greggain, took on a coaching role with Golf Canada, was nominated by a fellow family physician.

“It is humbling to receive this award, having been acknowledged by my colleagues,” he said. “I stand shoulder to shoulder with a devoted group of family physicians across this province who have cared for their patients, communities, their families, and each other over this year of a pandemic.

“I am privileged to have a gracious wife and family, engaged Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in Hope and the Fraser Canyon, amazing colleagues, dedicated clinic staff, and exceptional health care partners, with whom I will share this honour. We have all been in this together.”

Greggain’s nominator described him as “the quintessential rural family doc.”

During his time in Hope (from 2007 to 2021) he maintained a full-time practice while also serving as the medical director at the Hope Medical Centre and the Fraser Canyon Clinic, the site medical director at Fraser Canyon Hospital and the chairperson of the Chilliwack Division of Family Practice.

In 2009, working in collaboration with local Indigenous and health authority partners, Greggain and Chief Delores O’Donahey were driving forces in the development of the House of Sexwna7m, an Indigenous-led primary care outreach clinic in Anderson Creek.

British Columbians took the time to nominate over 350 family doctors from across the province, a record number of nominations.

“In their nomination letters, the public told us that they really value the relationships they are able to build with their family doctors. Many say that their families’ safety and health simply wouldn’t be the same without the care they receive from their doctor,” said Dr. Marjorie Docherty, a Kelowna-based family physician and President of the BC College of Family Physicians. “We especially enjoy reading about family doctors who treat multiple generations of the same family. In this way, family doctors are able to understand the patient’s family history, their values, past experiences and their ongoing health concerns.”
