Longworth dropped to C event

Vernon's Mark Longworth has to take the C event route in hopes of making Saturday's playoff round.

Vernon’s Mark Longworth has to take the C event route in hopes of making Saturday’s playoff round in the Canadian Direct Insurance Men’s Curling Championships in his hometown.

Longworth, 60, is in his eighth  provincial tankard and third with his son, Michael, who is at third. John Slattery and Jonathan Gardner are working the front end.

Longworth, who lost 8-6 to Tom Buchy of Kimberley Friday morning, faces Ken McArdle of New Westminster today at 2 p.m. in C event quarterfinal action. The loser is eliminated from the triple-knockout tournament.

Two-time B.C. champion Dean Joanisse of New Westminster takes on Buchy in the B final at 2 p.m. with the winner moving to the page playoffs Satrurday at 11 a.m. against defending champion Jim Cotter of Vernon.

Cotter, who lost the Tim Hortons Brier final to Kevin Koe of Calgary last year, is the defending provincial champion. He is supported by Ryan Kuhn at third and a front end of Rick Sawatsky and Tyrel Griffith.

The two C event qualifiers will meet in the other playoff game Saturday at 11 a.m. with the winner then tangling with the  loser of the Cotter-Buchy/Joanisse contest. The final goes Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

The Brier goes Feb. 28-March 7 in Calgary.
