A traveller who told U.S. border guards he was lost and didn’t want to enter the states was taken into custody in front of his family last week after officers discovered he was wanted on drug-related charges.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, the man arrived at the Pacific Highway crossing around 8 p.m. on Sept. 27 with his wife and son.
A routine inspection determined the driver was wanted for “failure to appear on charges of possession of narcotics with intent to distribute.”
Van Sang Jack Tran, 37 – a national of Vietnam and citizen of Canada – was taken into custody and transported to Whatcom County jail.
Port Director Kenneth L. Williams described situations where family members have to witness the arrest of a parent or spouse as “unfortunate.
“However, our officers handled these situations discreetly and respectfully,” Williams said in a news release.
“At the end of the day, we removed a criminal from the country.”
