BC Assessment is being proactive by giving property owners in Chilliwack a little advance notice about what is coming with their 2017 assessments.
Any property in Chilliwack seeing an average increase of more than 15% for that property class is receiving notification of their draft assessments by mail this week.
There were only 16 letters like these were fired off to Chilliwack owners last year but the number of early letters has skyrocketed for 2017.
“This year 5.45% of the properties within Chilliwack will be receiving a letter,” said Smith in response to questions from the Progress. “That represents approximately 1,700 properties.”
Usually the assessment notice doesn’t come by mail until the first week of January.
“Those properties are seeing an increase above the average which may impact their property taxes,” said Brian Smith, deputy assessor, Fraser Valley office of BC Assessment.
Properties that have undergone “a property class change” based on the use of the property, will also be receiving one.
Anyone wanting to look at sales within their area of properties that have sold between April to September, BC Assessment has their ‘e-value BC’ tool updated with sales in 2016 against the 2016 assessments.
“This can be used to see what properties have been selling for your area and can see the difference in the previous years assessment compared to this year sales. The updated 2017 assessments will be showing up on the website in the new year.”
