Lumby considers healthy initiative

As Lumby’s population ages, officials are being urged to help keep residents healthy and active

As Lumby’s population ages, officials are being urged to help keep residents healthy and active.

Council has received a presentation from resident Allen Haworth about the current state of recreational facilities and the need to promote fitness.

“The presentation was very thought-provoking and we were given information to consider,” said Coun. Jo Anne Fisher.

Haworth told council that people who exercise later in life, you are three times more likely to stay healthy.

“Google the topic seniors exercising and there are a myriad of articles about the benefits of seniors exercising,” he said.

Haworth suggested a range of equipment that could be acquired in the community including a tread climber, elliptical spinner, treadmill, dumbbells and stability balls.

Possible funding sources from community groups and senior government were also highlighted.

“With the existing facilities in Lumby, access is difficult for the public,” said Haworth, adding that storage and space is limited at the White Valley Community Centre.

One option, he believes, is for the Monashee Mews seniors residence to incorporate a gym in the proposed expansion.

Fisher admits there is a need to consider how to  promote healthy lifestyles as the population gets older.

“It’s an issue for all communities large and small,” she said.

Much of the challenge comes during the winter when outdoor amenities, such as the exercise circuit in Oval Park, is inaccessible because of snow and cold weather.

“We have to look at the current programming and how it’s utilized and then go from there,” said Fisher of council possibly responding to Haworth’s presentation.
