Canada’s 150th birthday will be one to remember in Lumby.
Council agreed Monday to pump $5,000 into Canada Day festivities July 1.
“We want to ensure we have a proper Canada Day celebration,” said Coun. Randal Ostafichuk.
“We want to attract crowds to Lumby.”
The village had applied to the federal government for funding but only about $1,500 was received, so council decided more financial resources were needed for July 1.
“I’m excited about some of the events planned and we hope to draw a crowd,” said Mayor Kevin Acton.
Smoking ban expands
Tougher smoking rules are the law in Lumby.
On Monday, council adopted a bylaw that forces people to be 7.5 metres away from a designated area before smoking instead of the current three metres.
“There hasn’t been any criticism from the public,” said Mayor Kevin Acton.
“People are used to not smoking in public.”
Under the bylaw, smoking is prohibited within 7.5 metres of bus stops, in any park, including playgrounds, playing fields, spray park, pool, skate park or trail. Smoking is also not allowed on the Salmon Trail.
