There could be a further crackdown on smoking in Lumby.
Village officials are considering how to reinforce anti-tobacco rules after University of B.C. nursing students surveyed Charles Bloom Secondary School students about smoking and vaping.
“There was a lot of good information,” said Mayor Kevin Acton.
Seventy-seven per cent of the CBSS students surveyed want a smoke-free Lumby, and only about 13 per cent of the students smoke.
“They have a grip on what’s good for you and not good for you, and the health impact later in life,” said Acton.
CBSS students expressed a need to enforce the rules, which ban smoking in public places.
Acton says village staff will consider the issue further, and the distance smoking is allowed from a public area may shift from three to six metres.
“It shows that we’re going in the right direction,” said Acton.
“Smoking in a public place is not a good idea.”
Bed and breakfasts on track
There may soon be bed and breakfasts available for visitors to Lumby.
Council has adopted a bylaw amendment that adds boarding accommodations within the residential single-family zone.
Mayor Kevin Acton says bed and breakfasts will provide a boost to the local economy.
“There will be an opportunity for people to come and explore the community,” he said.
But because such accommodations will be in residential areas, Acton says there’s a need to address concerns from neighbours.
“We will make sure there is parking and that the noise bylaw will be followed,” he said.
