Lumby pesticide ban stays

A sea of dandelions is the preferred option over harmful chemicals in Lumby.

The village recently reviewed its ban on cosmetic pesticides for weed control in parks and public grounds, and a motion to rescind the ban was shot down.

“We have far more,” said Coun. Nick Hodge, of the number of weeds popping up. “It’s quite noticeable, especially around the village office.”

The ban was established in 2014, which included a provision to review the impact of the ban.

But since Lumby council has only received one complaint about the weeds, the ban is sticking.

“We need dandelions for bees so it’s all working just fine,” said Mayor Kevin Acton.

With the community becoming home to more and more young families, Hodge says it’s also important to protect the little ones from the harmful pesticides.

“The spray park (Monday) night was just full of families and the kids are close to the ground.”
