Immediate action is being taken to keep high water from potentially washing into Lumby.
Twenty wildland firefighters will be on scene Monday and Tuesday to stockpile sandbags for rapid deployment in case flooding occurs this spring.
“We don’t want a deluge of water in our area so we want to be prepared,” said Mayor Kevin Acton.
Flooding has impacted residences and businesses in recent years along Bessette, Harris and Duteau creeks.
And Acton insists there is still a risk even though early warm temperatures have reduced the snowpack.
“There’s not a lot of snow at the high altitude so water may be held back in reservoirs and if we get a lot of rain in June, there could be problems,” he said.
“We have the potential to flood every year.”
Emergency Management B.C. and the Ministry of Forests have authorized the use of the firefighters.
Residents will notice increased activity around curling Club where the sandbags will be filled.
