Improved basketball facilities could move ahead in Lumby.
The White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee is considering upgrades to the Oval Park basketball court in conjunction with the 2014/2015 B.C. Girls A Basketball Provincials Committee.
“They are getting deteriorated and they would like the facilities repaired,” said Eugene Foisy, WVPRCC director.
WVPRCC won’t make a final decision on improvements until the 2015 budget is completed.
“We don’t know the cost of it yet,” said Foisy.
During a presentation, the B.C. Girls A Basketball Provincials Committee raised numerous concerns about the current condition of the basketball court.
“The baskets vary in height and the nets are falling off,” said Jennie Currie, provincials committee spokesperson.
“The surface is difficult to dribble on and there are no court lines.”
Currie is suggesting a joint project between her committee and WVPRCC to upgrade the court to include rubber tiles or textured paint.
“The basketball provincial committee has funds it would like to donate to the project,” she said.
“We are asking for the Regional District of North Okanagan to provide manpower and equipment for the project.”
Currie believes an enhanced court will provide more opportunities for youth to be active.
“We can host events like three-on-three competitions,” she said.
Rick Fairbairn, WVPRCC chairperson, is hopeful that improvements can be made to the court.
“It certainly needs to be upgraded and we will look at it further,” he said.
