It’s early days when it comes to Lumby’s 2017 budget.
Staff discussed the financial plan with council Monday but no details, including a possible tax increase, have been hammered out yet.
However, Coun. Nick Hodge is already making it clear that he doesn’t want to see taxes rise.
“My own sense is Lumby spent $700,000 to purchase property without borrowing and it’s a sign that we collect enough taxes,” he said.
As part of the budget, capital projects and making temporary staff positions permanent are being considered.
Chamber provided funds
The Village of Lumby is reaching out financially to the Lumby Chamber of Commerce.
Council has agreed to provide $20,000 while a further $20,000 will come from rural Lumby through the regional district. The goal is to move the chamber towards sustainability.
“The chamber has done incredible work in the community and we want to support them,” said Mayor Kevin Acton.
“We have some projects the chamber could be involved in.”
The chamber had initially asked for $40,000 just from the village but that would translate into about a five per cent tax increase for village taxpayers.
