Ongoing opposition couldn’t stop a Kingfisher development from overcoming one final hurdle.
The Regional District of North Okanagan board has adopted a bylaw that would rezone a property at Parkway and Mabel Lake roads so a 24-lot residential subdivision and a one-acre commercial unit can be built.
“The official community plan sets out the criteria and the developer brought forward an application that meets the criteria,” said director Rick Fairbairn.
Voting against the bylaw were directors Mike Macnabb and Jackie Pearase.
“This isn’t the time for it,” said Pearase, who represents the Kingfisher area.
Some residents have pointed to a 2012 area plan for Kingfisher which identified a lack of parking and infrastructure and possible environmental impacts from development.
“I’d like to see those issues addressed first,” said Pearase, adding that the project is premature.
“Is there a real need for more housing? I have seen the market and the market is stagnant.”
The developer has stated that his project will address concerns about buoys on the lake and suites in some of his units will provide seasonal workers at the Mabel Lake Resort with accommodations.
