Mabel Lake Road slope failure creates hazard

Work is currently underway to repair the slope, though no estimate time of completion is available

A slope failure is causing hazardous road conditions near Enderby.

“A slope failure, triggered by rain and snow melt, occurred late Saturday afternoon along Mabel Lake Road, approximately 14 km east of Enderby,” said Danielle Pope, with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

“The eastbound lane was affected and traffic control is in place. One lane is open to traffic through this area, and drivers should continue to slow down and use caution.”

Herman Halvorson, Regional District of North Okanagan Electoral Area F — or rural Enderby — director, said the district is aware of the issue.

“This is a top priority for Area F, getting that road redone and fixed,” Halvorson said. “The ground out there is very, very saturated. We could be in for more activity in regards to slides.”

Flaggers with Frontline Traffic Control Inc. have been on site since Saturday and warn drivers to proceed at their own risk.

Geotechnical engineers visited the site of the slope failure to provide instruction for repairs and work on the road began Monday afternoon.

There is currently no estimated time of completion.
