Graduation can be an unforgettable time, and one Saanich woman is doing her part to ensure those memories that last a lifetime won’t carry a heavy cost.

The Magic Wand Project provides dresses and tuxedos to help local graduates celebrate in style.

“We try to stress it’s for grads to borrow rather than buy. It allows a great savings for the students and the parents,” said Magic Wand founder Elizabeth Surerus, who started the project in 2001 and estimates it has since helped close to 700 students.

She said the project was initially started to help students with financial challenges, but the donations received now allow Magic Wand to offer the service to all students in Greater Victoria.

“We want to include all students, so they can use that money to further their education or travel or save,” said Surerus, who retired from a career as a teacher and school counsellor.

She said students can choose from more than 100 dresses and about 40 tuxedos of all styles and sizes, and there is even a selection of accessories such as shoes, purses and jewelry.

The motto for the Magic Wand Project is: Why buy when you can borrow.

“Rather than spend hundreds of dollars on a dress that’s only worn once and then put in the closet, it would be nice if they come to me,” said Surerus, adding there is a minimal fee to cover dry cleaning, but even that can be waived if it poses a challenge.

Those interested in borrowing an outfit from the Magic Wand can book an appointment with Surerus by calling 250-658-0246, or email esurerus@telus.net.
