The man accused of shooting his roommate, 31-year-old Matthew James Cameron, was released on bail Friday.

Cameron is charged with one count of attempted murder with a firearm in relation to events that occurred Monday night at a residence just off Naramata Road on Lindsay Road.

The bail terms were decided out of court between Crown counsel John Swanson and Cameron’s defence Ian McAndrews and a $25,000 recognizance was set along with multiple terms and conditions.

Cameron will reside at his parents home, with a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and is restricted from possessing firearms and contacting the complainant as well as another Crown witness.

“I met with defence counsel and we talked about what would be reasonable terms of bail for him, and I said look at a minimum this is what the Crown would require and this is what we’ll ask the court to impose. He met with his clients and at the end of the day we agreed they were reasonable terms,” Swanson said,

Police were called to a residence on Lindsay Road around 10:30 p.m. July 13 after reports of shots fired. Cameron was taken into custody and his 31-year-old roommate was taken to hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Police said another person was injured in the shooting as well, but was quickly treated and released from the hospital Monday night.

Nearby neighbour Phil Quinn said he hadn’t seen anything like this in 20 years living in the area, and that the two men seemed to be good friends.

“They come by quite often. They were always quite happy. They stick together a lot and they seem to be really good friends,” Quinn told the Western News Tuesday.

“It’s quite surprising. They seem really happy all the time so I’m quite shocked actually that something happened.”

He said the two have lived at the Lindsay Road residence for the past couple years and he believed they worked in the oilfield in Alberta.

Cameron will be back in court July 29.
