Kelowna RCMP say a man was held in police custody over the weekend and faces potential charges after allegedly assaulting a security guard and disturbing countless guests, staying in two Kelowna hotels early Saturday morning.

On Jan. 21 at 1:59 am, Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of a suspicious occurrence at the Sandman Hotel, located in the 2100-block of Harvey Avenue, where a man had been observed by staff acting in what they called an irrational manner.

It was also alleged that the man physically assaulted a hotel security guard, maliciously pulled the building’s fire alarm and stole a fire extinguisher.

While responding, police officers were told the man was reportedly smashing glass at the neighbouring Ramada Hotel, where he allegedly activated the Ramada’s fire alarm and set off the stolen fire extinguisher.

“Kelowna RCMP safely took the suspect into police custody, with the assistance of police service dog Ice and an off-duty RCMP officer, from Northern BC, (who was) staying at the hotel,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey of the Kelowna detachment.

“A search of the suspect incidental to his arrest yielded suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia.”

The suspect, a 33-year-old Kelowna man of no fixed address, was expected to appear in court Monday.

He faces several potential charges., said O’Donaghey.
