One man has been hospitalized in serious condition and another is in police custody following an altercation in Guildford on Thursday night.
Around 9:15 p.m., Surrey RCMP received a call about a man lying bleeding and unconscious in the street in the 14900-block of 98 Avenue.
According to witnesses, the victim, a 29-year-old, was seen arguing with the suspect, a 28-year old man, moments before the assault took place.
“Our investigation revealed that another male and our victim had been at a residence nearby [and] had left that residence arguing,” said RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet. “They left the residence together and at some point something happens in the argument… the one male (suspect) returns to the residence. The other male is the one we found unconscious and bleeding. Our members found the male – suspect, at this point – a few blocks away where he was immediately arrested.”
Both men are well-known to police and drugs and alcohol are believed to be factors.
The victim is still being assessed by doctors in the hospital while the suspect is still in police custody.
Paquet said he has not yet been charged, but charges are “likely to be laid in the near future.”
Police have spoken to several people who were in the residence when the argument started, but so far have not found any direct witnesses to the assault.
However, they believe a blunt weapon may have been used.
“The injuries are consistent with blunt trauma, so more than likely an object was used,” said Paquet.
Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the assault is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
