Man facing more than 10 charges remains in custody

Case was put over for another week in Campbell River while his lawyer reviews police reports of further incidents he’s charged with

A man with no fixed address, who’s facing numerous charges, will remain in custody until he gets a bail hearing.

Lawrence Watson, 49, is presently in custody by consent at the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Facility in Victoria.

He was arrested last week in Campbell River. On Monday, he appeared in provincial court by video, but his case was put over for another week while his lawyer reviews police reports of further incidents he’s charged with.

“I’m not sure he even knows what he’s charged with,” Crown prosecutor Adrienne Venturini told the judge, referring to the new criminal files which arrived on her desk Friday.

Watson is already facing a total of 10 charges including four each for theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

The other two charges are for fraudulently obtaining transportation and attempt to commit.

As for the new charges, Judge Brian Klaver read out the crimes Watson is accused of:

  • Break, enter and theft of a residence on S. Murphy Street, which occurred between April 13-16.
  • Not paying for food at a local restaurant on April 12.
  • Theft of a credit card.
  • Using a stolen credit card to buy items at Mac’s Convenience Store, 7-Eleven and Walmart.
  • Threatening a Walmart employee.

The last charge got Watson’s attention.

“What?” he yelled out.

Watson said little else and is due back in court, by video, on April 30.
